Love it or loathe it, the unicorn trend looks like it’s here to stay. From homeware and inflatables to cakes and accessories, these popular mythical creatures are just about everywhere this year.
Now I’m firmly in the ‘love it’ camp so when Lilli Oliver cake boutique invited me along to their Unicorn and Rainbows Tea Party yesterday, there was no question that the answer would be an immediate yes. Granted this event may be aimed at young children but hey, I wasn’t going to let that little detail make me miss out on unicorns and cake. No chance!
For those of you that don’t know, Lilli Oliver Cake Boutique is an independent bakery based in Bury, Lancashire. Founded by the awesome Vedia (seriously, I realised that this lady is my kindred spirit after we spent over an hour chatting on the phone last year about all things vintage, rockabilly, chalk paint and foodie related) and built on a love of cake and parties (again, my soulmate), Lilli Oliver Cake Boutique has become well-established in the area and is renowned for hosting magical children’s events.
Just a two-minute walk from Bury tram station, the shop sits on the corner of Broad Street and boasts a quirky exterior with Alice in Wonderland memorabilia in the windows. My youngest daughter, Lucie, and I were greeted by friendly staff and a room filled with colourful balloons and confetti. We took our seats and enjoyed a glass of ‘unicorn juice’ (strawberry and raspberry – one kid asked if it’d turn her into a unicorn. Now that would be super impressive) whilst we waited for the other guests to arrive.
We were soon joined by a handful of adults and excited children in bright, unicorn-themed outfits – I quickly felt somewhat underdressed in my jeans and black shirt and wished I was still young enough to pull off a neon, rainbow tutu and glittery JoJo bow! After a quick coffee for the grown ups, Vedia and her crew brought out cake stands crammed with finger sandwiches, unicorn biscuits, rainbow macarons, and sweeties, much the delight of everybody in the room.
The sandwiches got completely overlooked in favour of the awesome sweet treats and we all chatted about how brilliant they looked (and tasted). Just when we thought we’d finished our little feast, we were then offered a portion of rainbow cake with cream and sprinkles. Next up was handmade rainbow fudge, which was created from white chocolate and tasted absolutely divine. After a fresh mini pavlova for the adults and jelly and ice cream for the kids, it’s safe to say that my sweet tooth was more than satisfied.
An hour and a half later, we filled our party bags (unicorn and rainbow themed of course) with leftovers and had a quick nosey around the bakery before saying goodbye. Vedia also mentioned that, due to popular demand, she’ll be holding another Unicorn and Rainbows Tea Party later in the month and even hinted at introducing an extra special, equally magical themed party soon.
I can’t tell you more about that just yet but if you’d like to find out more about the bespoke birthday cakes (Lucie has already requested the black unicorn one for her birthday later this year), afternoon teas, hen parties, freakshakes, cake decorating workshops and much more, you can like the Lilli Oliver Cake Boutique Facebook page here.
A huge thank you to Vedia and her wonderful team for a highly memorable afternoon.
*We were invited to this event FOC, however, all opinions are my own.
