As I stated in my recent post about Friendly Soap Shampoo Bars, I’ve been actively taking small steps to help me move forward into a lifestyle that’s more sustainable for the environment.
I’m pretty clued up about the plastic side of things but when it comes to the impact my food habits have, not so much. When OGGS got in touch to ask if they could send me some of their new dairy-free and egg-free cakes, it was a great way for me to discover if I could indeed consider swapping my ‘usual’ sweet treats for something different.
I’ll be honest – in the past, the idea of vegan cake would conjure up images of dry, tasteless sponge (with the consistency of a bath sponge, ironically) but luckily, I soon discovered that they’ve come a long way since then.
After doing a little research, I also learnt that OGGS supply chain is ethically sound, ensuring that they have as little impact on the environment as possible (low carbon emissions) whilst putting the wellbeing of humans (intolerance to human trafficking) and animals (vegan) at the very forefront of their products.
By replacing the eggs usually used in traditional cakes with protein aquafaba (plant-based protein). OGGS aim isn’t to ‘convert’ the world to veganism but to provide affordable, plant-based alternatives to everyday foods, with the extra peace of mind that every bite is having a tiny, positive impact on the environment.
So, let’s talk cake! My parcel contained individual mini-sponges in four flavours – Salted Caramel, Zesty Lemon, Chocolate Fudge and Victoria Sponge. In the name of providing an honest review, I had to try one of each; a hard job but someone has to do it, eh?
The first thing I noticed was that the sponge was denser than my go-to cakes, however, it also made them incredibly moist (I hate that word but couldn’t think of another one that would accurately describe them!) and if the pay off means that my own ethical footprint is greener then I’m good with that.
The lemon cake had a good balance of sweetness with a sharp zest whilst the Victoria Sponge had a good, thick layer of jam and ‘buttercream’. In fact, I’m not sure what the ‘buttercream’ filling is made of but it definitely worked. The chocolate fudge was rich without being overpowering and the salted caramel was sticky, sweet and equally impressive.
Launching in Waitrose tomorrow (29 May) and Sainsbury’s from 5 June, the cakes will be priced at £2.20 for a 2-pack, £4.25 for a 4-pack and £4.95 for a 5″ cake. You can find out more about OGGS and what they do here.
