A few weeks ago, I visited somewhere rather special – The Vintage Beauty Parlour, based in Chorlton, Manchester.
I actually attended a makeup class at the salon last year with my pin-up idol, Cherry Dollface and was excited to be back again. This time, I was booked in for a head full of glamorous Hollywood waves.
After being greeted by the gorgeous owner and director Bethany Jane Davis, we had a little chat about my hair over a pot of tea (how cute is this vintage china tea set?) and got to work.
Bethany is an award winning hair and make-up artist, most recently winning The National Vintage Award for Best Beauty and Grooming Business in 2015-16. She is also a published author on vintage hair and make-up and specialises in authentic vintage styles. With this impressive portfolio under her belt, I knew I’d be in good hands!
The salon decor is luxurious and fun. With soft, blush pink walls, a striking black and white tiled floor, glamorous mirrors and lighting, Rockabilly Radio on in the background, a cosy window seat and plenty of vintage pictures and trinkets dotted around, I felt right at home.
Bethany taught me how to set my hair properly and which products complimented my thin, shoulder length hair to give it the volume that it needed. Although I have dabbled in vintage hair styling before, I can never quite get the desired outcome myself and now suspect that this due to my lack of care and precision when setting curls!
After curling and pinning my hair carefully, this was then left to cool for around 45 minutes. Once set, Bethany worked her magic and created layers of soft Hollywood waves. These lasted perfectly for two days and are ideal for weddings, nights out or if you just want to spend the weekend looking a little bit fancy!
I’m now rather sad that Bethany won’t be doing my bridal hair and make up, however I have taken inspiration from my afternoon at The Vintage Beauty Parlour and am hoping to create something fairly respectable by myself on the big day!
